Starshakers Legacy 🪐
A downloadable game
Tabletop players are amazingly creative and make amazing things. Then they throw it all out. Move on.
I have a vision of a tabletop game that draws out and bakes in creative choices. It turns them into a system and changes the world.
I want each game to make itself a homebrew and change itself by what the players do and want until you are done and you are left without something new. An artifact that didn't exist when you started.
At the end of an amazing game, I want players to say how excited they are to ship this off and turn it into something. I want players to explore each other's work and grow from it.
Starshakers Legacy is TTRPG with a collaborative meta game that invites players to contribute on it. An open source* project that can grow with the community.
I currently have an early version of the rulebook. It's playable and I think it will be fun, but you will need to be creative with it and adapt your game as you go.
If you want to help, I need players. The act of playing will help make the game better, but only if you share your experience and thoughts. I would also be super happy with some art or anything like that. Telling someone about this would also be amazing. Last but not least, some cash in my hands will definitely help.
Money will probably go to getting legal help to get the licensing thing straightened out. It will also be a clear signal to me that it's worth me focusing on this and cleaning it up.
The game will always be free. Anything else would be a failure to understand what makes this project special. I only want my name on something really. I want this to exist as a community project that lives on its own.
For now I'm putting the game under Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-SA 4.0) but I want something a little different in the future. It shouldn't matter to most players either way, but if I get a chance, my hope it to make it so that modified copies can have a two year non-share clause so that creators can turn a profit from it more easily.
After the two years of private use are up, I want them to offer the same deal to others and open up more so that it doesn't need to sit and gather dust. Long term share and community building.
After seven years I would want the whole thing to drop down to CC0.
My hope is that this kind of system would pressure people to innovate more and share in the long term. The same as the way I hope that my game will nurture creativity and inspire integration.
the rulebook is online now! Download it for free! Donate if you like it and want more.
